I took a long weekend to take care of some errands and get in some extra hiking. Friday morning errands meant that I didn't get started until just before 9.

Siphon Draw kicked my :pk: today. It was warm and humid with very little breeze until you reached the top. The last 100 yards on Siphon Draw might as well have been a mile as slow as I was moving. I'm sure the GPS registered my pathetically slow movements during this portion as one long break. I pressed on and finally made it to the Flatiron after 2 hrs 20 mins.

I'm having surgery on my lower lip on Tuesday, so I've been eating stuff that I normally wouldn't eat to compensate for the week or two that I'll be on a liquid diet. I'm sure the 1500 calorie "kickin chicken" breakfast sandwich (a fried chicken cutlet with a fried egg, bacon and pepper jack cheese) or the equally loaded meatloaf, potatoes and a boat load of gravy the day before didn't help. But they sure were good!

I took a nice break on top, enjoyed the views, had an apple with some Triscuits, a healthy snack after the previous day's feast, and let the nice breeze on top wash over me. On the way down, I ran into some ladies hiking up Siphon Draw for the first time. There is a rock slide just below the Flatiron that some people are mistaking for the trail. They did as well. One of them spotted me as I was heading down and asked if I was on the trail. I told her to head back down to the start of the rock slide. I waited for her and her two friends, then gave them some instruction on what to look for the rest of the way up. They were ready to go back down but I convinced them to continue on. Why turn around now when you've put in so much effort to get this far. With a renewed resolve, they continued on. I hope they made it.

I stopped at the Hitching Post for a Philly style cheesesteak and a cold beer (more bad calories), then drove home, hitting a rather large wave of blowing dust along the way. It was heading straight for the Supes. Glad to be done.
