When I looked at the weather forecast earlier in the week, it looked like Friday would be a stellar day for a hike, so I took a vacation day. The weather was just about perfect. The only thing missing was a breeze, which would have been nice going up the trail to the West Boulder Saddle.
There was a breeze at the saddle, not much, but it made a difference as I took a break before heading to Fremont Saddle. Lots of great views on this segment. The nearly vertical descent to Fremont saddle is a thrill.
After taking another break just above the saddle, I decided to extend the hike by adding in Upper Bark's Canyon instead of the Cave Trail. Bark's canyon, not Fritski's description of Upper Bark's Canyon, which I love as well. I headed over to the Weaver's overlook, took in the views, then headed to the turn off for Bark's Canyon.
When I reached the decision point for Bark's Canyon or Fritski's route, I thought a moment longer about continuing on Bark's. I know and like Fritski's route. The other is unknown to me and I know there will be some challenges. I took the challenge.
Almost immediately I knew I was in for tough hike. Vegetation was think in places. Cairns came and went. I'm sure I took a wrong turn here and there. One mile seemed like an eternity. Over an hour. Some blood. Ouch. Then it started to open up. Then a little more. Then I was at the Bluff Springs trail. Hallelujah!
The rest was familiar and uneventful, although I was dragging by now. Just wanted to be done. For only eight miles, this was a tough hike. But it was fun! |
