The plan was to only hike to a turn around point above the slick rock section. With Tibber leading the way we started out shortly after 8:00 am. This was a new adventure for me since it was my first time hiking in this section of the Superstitions. I would find that Siphon Draw and the final push to reach the top of Flat Iron certainly deserves its reputation for spectacular scenery and as a physically challenging hike.
As we proceeded up the draw at a leisurely pace several people in the group turned around and went back to camp. At the planned turn around point above the slick rock section I was still feeling energetic and decided to continue on towards Flat Iron with Lori and Barrett while the others returned to camp. We took our time with me setting a slow pace with many stops and made it to the top of Flat Iron at noon. 4 hours, not exactly a record but, hey, I was just glad to make it. After a quick lunch and some time enjoying the views we headed back. Barrett left first and zoomed back down needing to get to an afternoon commitment. On the way back Lori and I witnessed a rescue helicopter searching for someone in Siphon Draw above the slick rock section. They eventually found two people and retrieved them one at a time at the end of a long rope hanging under the helicopter. We didn't get back to camp until after 4:00 pm and the group at Tibber's Bday Bash got worried that maybe Lori and I were the subjects of the rescue efforts. My cell phone battery had died so they couldn't contact us and speculation was running rampant. So we were surprised with a hearty cheer from the group upon our return but I was mainly just happy that we had made it back in time for the catered Mexican feast Tibber had ordered for Saturday night.
We would later find out that the two rescued people had not been injured but had gotten cliffed out somewhere off trail in Siphon Draw and called for help. |
