Hiked up to the ridge top across FR139C from our camp where I could get limited cell phone reception - nothing much going on in the world so continued my walk going down to Merritt Draw. I hoped to see elk which in past years have always been in this area in the mornings but had no luck. On the way back to camp I came across a large elk skeleton which still had some patches of red on it despite having been gnawed nearly clean by predators and scavengers. The spine was broken just below the neck, all the ribs had been broken off the connecting points to the spine and the legs were all separated at the joints. Seems like it would take a large predator to tear up the skeleton like that. Maybe that's why we didn't hear or see any elk in this area the entire week we were there. Of course it could have been because GH likes to listen to NPR on the radio every evening and morning. Perhaps the elk are a conservative group and don't like that liberal nonsense on NPR. |
