Day One was a 653 mile drive from Tucson to my lodging at the Twin Rivers Cabins & RV Park along the Conejos River about 5 miles west of Antonito, Colorado.
I could have cut the time and distance of the drive some by heading straight up to Antonito from Espanola on US285, but that is a pretty boring stretch of highway. Heck, if I am going to grind out that many miles in a day, I might as get my money's worth and go for the more scenic finish! So out of Espanola it was up to Chama on US84, then to my destination via Highway 17. Well worth it, as I got to go by Echo Amphitheater, the Brazos Cliffs, and Cumbres and La Manga Passes. Highway 17 between Chama and Antonito is a very scenic drive that I have done many times over the years. Recommended if you are in the area.
It was raining when I left Tucson in the morning, but I didn't hit any more until I was going over the passes after crossing into Colorado (it was very light in both cases). It got dark before I reached Twin Rivers, which made it a bit tricky to find since I hadn't stayed there before, but I found it and the long day ended well. |
