This trip was to finally get out and camp with Jack, after we were run off the Pinalenos due to storms. Rather than go back up that long tedious road to Mt. Graham, I thought it would be nice to show Jack another new area, and to enjoy the nice easy drive in across the grasslands of Cochise County. On the way to the campground we made the obligatory stop to see John Ringo's grave at the Sanders Ranch.
We lucked out and got this in between periods of storms and heavy rain in the area. The weather was never threatening, but of course it was wet and humid. The streams were flowing much stronger than when I had camped there a month previous, so Jack got to see it in fine form! I invited Paul along to join us. We both have always liked it down there, with all the great trails that radiate out from near the campground, giving all sorts of loop hike possibilities.
On the first day after setting up we explored around the campground area, and also went a short ways up the Mormon Canyon Trail, then dropped down to the creek for a bit on the walk back. Day two was our big hike up Pole Bridge and back down via Morse Canyon (Paul was forced to bail on this one due to the grass pollen we stirred up causing a severe allergy attack...he hiked up Morse Canyon to the Monte Vista Lookout and back instead). The rest of the day/evening was just spent relaxing at camp. Next morning Jack and Paul packed up and left early, while I took a little more time breaking things down, enjoying my coffee and the peaceful sounds of the stream and birds. |
