Most of the time that I enjoy a ride on this narrow gauge steam railroad I do it out of Chama, New Mexico. This time I decided to ride it up to the lunch stop at Osier, Colorado from the eastern terminus at Antonito. A base camp for two nights at Twin Rivers about 5 miles west of town made this a snap. And a 10:00 morning departure meant I would have plenty of time before the ride. Perfect!
I hadn't been over this section in some time, so it was good to get to see Toltec Gorge and go through the two tunnels again. If you go up to Osier from Chama you miss out on those. With the aspen putting on a superb show in the high country, this turned out to be a wonderful day! The weather was forecast to be a problem on most of the days surrounding this trip (in no small part due to that loopy upper level low that has been hanging around for more than a week). Somehow, I got lucky and Tuesday was mostly sunny with no rain! And you know I wanted sunshine on those aspen to make them pop!
Tuesday was the mellow day of my trip, with only the train ride on the agenda. It was nice to get a restful day in there, because Wednesday was going to be packed with things to do (and of course true to form for me, I didn't even come close to doing them all ).

FYI...all photos except the first 3 (those were cell phone shots) and all video of the train were taken with my Panasonic DMC-ZS40 camera. I have been working it a lot lately and am impressed with its performance (I don't use the GPS very often, but it too works fine). |
