Been dealing with too many things at home lately and needed to hit the highway. Nothing particular in mind, just a vague notion about looking for wildflowers and getting out of the city. I did stop at Catalina State Park to get a new annual parks pass, but didn't go in today, just picked up the pass. Very busy place late morning. As I was rolling along I decided to drive the Florence-Kelvin Road, and loop back to Tucson through Winkelman and Mammoth. Along the way I took a side trip down to the Gila River at the site of the former mining town Cochran. Not much of Cochran remains now, just some old foundations and the 5 beehive coke ovens on a hillside across the river.
The scenery is wonderful and the desert vegetation in the area is quite impressive. This is a popular area and there were quite a few people out enjoying the warm weather. After looking around for awhile, I headed back out and continued the drive as planned. The restaurant I wanted to have dinner at in Mammoth was closed (3 PM on Sundays),as was my second choice, so not liking La Casita, I just drove on and hit Del Taco in Tucson on the way home. |
