This one's been on my list for awhile. When my wife decided she wasn't interested in joining in on a family-friendly President's Day hike, my son and I decided we would tackle something a little more challenging. Battleship it was!

We enjoyed the hike. Relatively few folks on the trail today, and we saw no one at all from the Boulder Canyon junction to the top of Battleship and back.

There is still a fair amount of water in Boulder Canyon, with some large pools, and several great camping sites along the way. Filtering water for an overnight campout would not be a problem.

The Views from the top of Battleship were as advertised--outstanding. It was a bit windy on top, but the breeze felt good as the temps were in the mid-80s.

We followed the "Official Route" using Route Scout on the way up. That turned out to be a mistake. The Official Route peels off the Boulder Canyon trail well past where it needs to. Then it wraps around the east side of the Battleship and skirts it at uncomfortable, scree and prickly-bush-filled angles, before finally making a somewhat precarious climb up to the ridgeline. Once on top, we could see a well-established route leading back along the ridgeline all the way to the north end of the ship and descending from the northern tip down the west side. We took this route on the way back. It was much easier, shorter, more enjoyable, and relatively well-cairned. (Compare the up and back tracks on my posted route). I suggest the Official Route be updated to reflect the more direct, shorter, and less precarious route--and skip skirting along the east side of the ship before mounting the ridgeline. :M2C:

A great adventure!
