This is a nice, fairly easy, and very scenic hike, with part of it along the Arizona Trail. The five of us made good time up and down, but the last 400 feet or so bushwhack hasn't gotten any easier. You really have to watch your footing up and down. No dense vegetation. Every one made it without any lasting damage to anything, except pride.
Very nice views from the top of San Manuel, the Biosphere, Rice Peak, the San Juan Valley, and the north side of Mt Lemmon. We could actually see the stack in Winkelman. We found the signin jar at the top and noted our earlier trips up, with one trip by club members dating back to ~2006. Ran into a group of 10-12 equestrians from Hay Creek Ranch off the Control Road, as we were going down. They were amazed we actually made it to the top of Apache. Kinda makes you feel good about hiking. |
