| no partners | | Beautiful day on the rock. I couldn't find a place holder for One Day Wall or for the Chessman Area, so I posted this as a Generic. One Day Wall was so named because it was put up (mostly) in one day. Fancy that. After climbing up there, I can understand why they didn't want to climb it again. This is one tough slog up a steep drainage with 30 pounds of gear on your back. My right knee hurt for a couple of days afterward. One Day Wall has several good medium difficult routes and is located at the southernmost end (which is the highest point) of Chessman. Other walls at Chessman inlcude King, Knight, Andy Cook, and Lorax. I included a couple of pictures which may help finding it. It's covered pretty well in Squeezing the Lemmon III. The parking point is at MP 9.4 on Catalina Hwy, in the beginning of the Bear Canyon area.
There are 5 nice routes on the left wall (we did all of them) and a 5.7 and 5.9- on the righthand wall if you're looking for more, sort of behind where the belayer would stand. From the left: Day of Drilling Dangerously 5.6 (Bolts, Gear, Chains), No One Saw That, Right 5.7 (GC), Catalonian Adventures 5.8 (BC), (It's Not) Rocket Science 5.7 (BC), and Tradical Mystery Tour 5.6 (GC). There are lots of routes in the Chessman area, but mostly harder.
Once you get there, the climbing is great, but the approach is horrible up and down. Great views of Thimble, 7 Cataracts Vista, and toward Cathedral Peak. |
