There are 4 major drainages that branch off the southern end of Pine Mountain; Monroe, Yellow Jacket, Horse Thief, and Trap Canyons. FR 16 climbs up and down each of them as it makes its way out to the Verde. They come together to form Middle Red Creek. My interest was in the riparian areas south of FR 16. I parked at the corral along Monroe and hiked to Horse Thief using 16. Along the way offers nice views of Pine Mountain as well as a healthy Juniper forest. There was alot of deer sign which made for no surprise of spotting several different groups of Whitetail. Upon reaching Horse Thief I checked out the still utilized ranch cabins. They were stocked with goods and show frequent use by the rancher that 'owns' it. As I headed down Horse Thief towards Trap small pockets of running water emerged. There was a well defined 3 sided ruin where the 2 canyons meet. Once in Trap Canyon it was about a mile before hitting the lush Riparian habitat I was looking for. Cat tail had a large presence along the creek and for the most part there was somewhat of a game trail to follow. Sections had nice cascades and even some deep swim-able pools. At one point while making my way down the creek I heard a rustle on the slope above. As I looked I saw a bush shaking and over the top comes a Coati. Surpised, I readied my camera as he made his way up over the top of the bush beside it(looking for birds nests id imagine). He had no idea I was 20 yards away. I didnt know they had a presence along the Verde so they must be migrating north quite well. Really nice section of creek were found below were Trap turns into Middle Red Creek. It felt much more isolated as the canyon walls were taller and steeper. I came across a really nice 3 tiered waterfall with the tallest being about 25 feet. It had a large pool at the base to revisit when the weather gets a little warmer. After winding through the canyon for another hour I finally came across the mouth of Yellow Jacket. The was no water up steam but a couple slot made it enjoyable. Before long I was back at the truck and headed home. It was an awesome day in what could be considered wilderness.
