This was the second day camping on the Mogollon Rim near Knoll Lake with Chumley. The day before I had hiked up West Leonard Canyon from our campsite. This day I decided to hike down the West fork to its confluence with the East Fork. Then I would hike up the East Fork until reaching a point near camp where I would climb out of the canyon and head back to camp. As I descended the side of West Leonard a large cow elk went crashing through the trees. The elk appear to hangout in the heavy cover on the canyon sides during the day. There was a nice flow of water in the canyon bottom between pools of water. Some of these pools were quite large and I stopped for lunch on the sandy bank of one long pool at a bend in the canyon. The stream disappeared beneath a thick bed of gravel as it neared the confluence with the East Fork. There was a quite large pool at this confluence. The East fork had much less water, maybe partially due to the dam at Knoll Lake. There were long dry stretches with trickles of water in between. What was really nice about this section of the canyon were the wide tree and fern covered banks along the sides. Some were 50-100 yds wide and made for a pleasant stroll in the shade of the pines as the day was getting warmer.

I found an old logging skid road going up the side of the canyon as I neared camp which made for an easy climb out of the canyon. After checking out Knoll Tank I returned to camp in the early afternoon to find Chumley sleeping in the bed of his pickup truck backed into the shade. So much for his stated plan to "do some work on the laptop" after returning to camp from his hike across the upper ends of the Middle and West forks of Leonard Canyon. I settled into a camp chair in the shade to read a book. It soon got so warm that I had to soak my shirt in water to cool off but it did not disturb the slumbering Chumley. He would head for home after stopping by Knoll Lake for some late afternoon kayaking. I opted to stay over Sunday night and leave Monday morning to avoid the dusty RV traffic on FR300 Sunday afternoon.
