It is very noticeable and I have seen it before and often wondered what it was. It can be seen when you travel east from Apache Junction towards Superior. As I got closer I decided to try and take one of the near by dirt roads and see if I could get close to it.
My first try failed and I ended up near "Granny Pass" which was too far east. I backtracked and then continued to work my way towards the mountain. Eventually I got to an old mine road that put me very close. From here I just threw on the Camelback and started hiking up the side of the mountain. Before long I was on top of it. Killer views in all directions!
On the way out I took a left (into Cottonwood Canyon) when I should have taken a right. About a mile down the road there are some interpretive signs for some Petroglyphs. I checked these out and then was on my way. Just a little further down the creek you come to a Private Property sign and a locked gate. I turned back and made my way back out to the 60 with no issues.
I am posting both my hiking track and the driving track to the mine. A high clearance vehicle is a must for this one and 4 wheel drive is a plus. |
