| no partners | | This year I've spent more time hiking and climbing peaks in this quad than anywhere else so I figured it was about time to climb the namesake of the quad, Mineral Mountain.
With a tentative plan to climb another peak after Mineral Mountain, I decided to drive as close as possible to it to keep the hiking time to a minimum. The last 1/4 mile of the drive demanded quite a bit of care, first because highway tread passenger tires had very little grip and second, I plan on selling the tires and wheels when I the lift is done so I didn't want to tear them up.
I didn't expect to see anyone and that held true, all I saw were a few cows. I parked within .4 mile from the summit but due to having to wind around some high points, zig-zagging up and down the steep sections and avoiding drop-offs it took .75 miles of hiking/climbing to reach the summit.
Although the summit was just over 3300 feet in elevation, the climb felt every bit the butt-kicker as the climbing I did in Colorado at 11-12,000 feet. Of course the ft/mile of this climb was higher than any of the Colorado climbs so thankfully it was a short one. So between the ft/mile and the oppressive humidity, I lost over 2 pounds in an hour-and-a-half! And that was even drinking 16 oz immediately before leaving the car, 32 oz during the hike and another 16 oz afterward.
Needless to say, I wasn't about to take on another peak today... unless I waited until mid-afternoon when the humidity would be reasonable. I'd much rather hike 100-105 degree temps with 12-20% humidity than even 80 degrees at 60%+ humidity.
But by reaching the summit that makes 11 out of the 23 ranked peaks in the Mineral Mountain Quad I've climbed. Although with one more I'll be over the halfway mark, I figure I'm already over halfway because there are at least three summits I will never reach, unless dropped by helicopter.
I'll post all 30 photos on HAZ as well as my website here:
