The trail starts out as a big, wide concrete walkway that winds up to where it meets the actual dirt trail near the top of the ridge. That looked too easy, so I headed off towards the North working my way around the outside of the barbed wire fence around the water tank. From there it was a short steep climb up an overgrown game trail to the ridge. I wouldn't recommend that and took the easy way on the return.
Temescal Peak is not the highest point in the Santa Monica Mountains as I had thought. Looking out to the West showed me that. But it is the highest point in Topanga State Park, so that's something. After last weekend's hike this way I recognized the side trail up the peak and made it to the top easily. The view was good even with the haze. I'd love to come up here on a really clear day. Good quick hike for an afternoon.
Edit: Forgot to mention this the first time around. At the end of the hike when I got to my car a couple of deer walked past just on the other side of a fence. The sun was right behind them so I couldn't get a picture, but it was cool seeing deer wandering around a residential area. |
