Nice little stroll up the rim via Colonel Devin. The point was to get some uphill, sweat a little and call it a day. Spooked 2 deer hanging by the creek right away. Stayed on the east side of the East Verde for as long as I could. Very faint trail and tall grass but much more scenic than power lines. Checked on an old camp spot, everything still looks the same. Raspberries are all burned out, plenty of blackberries though. Water everywhere today. The first mile and a half we were basically trekking through a marsh area. Once atop the rim, me and Rosie jumped on Fred Haught Trail for a few miles. Rosie was in heaven. Good tread, flat trail, abundant shade, neck - high ferns and water everywhere kept her busy. We went as far as Fred Haught Canyon but went off trail and continued up Gen. Springs Cyn to a nice little swimming hole. By this time the daily thunder clouds were looming and although there was no nearby thunder, I figured we would get going. In one swift move I waded into the water, dipped myself in, got out immediately, dried off in the last little bit of sunshine and started footing it back down the trail. Right before reaching the cabin, thunder and lightning really started to get going and would continue as we made our way down #290. I just wanted to get off the edge of the rim and down to lower elevation before it reached me and thankfully we accomplished that. Rain started just before we reached an empty Washington Park TH. Well timed and a beautiful day on the rim.
