Having been sidelined for more than a week while nursing a lower leg injury (non-hiking related), I needed a night under the stars. Also, this would be Rosie's first backpack trip so this section of Highline was perfect because of the abundant water and more shade options than elsewhere on the Highline. Original plan was to reach the 260 TH but that didn't happen. Started Friday afternoon hiking directly into a thunderstorm. Once it hit I threw up a small tarp and we rode it out. The really loud thunder still startles Rosie but she actually handles it all very well for a 7 month old pup. The storm was short lived and almost instantly skies were blue again so we headed on down to Horton for camp. A little muddy on Highline as expected but we avoided the red mud which is much worse. Knew better than to camp by the spring on a Friday even though it was quiet upon our arrival, so we went down stream a mile or so and set up on the east side of the creek. Sat by the fire and watched about 30 boy scouts hike in via headlamp before getting to bed nice and early. Up and moving at 6 am Saturday while it was still chilly. Fall is certainly in the air around these parts. I noticed that some of the swelling and brusing in my leg had moved down into my foot. All of my toe knuckles on my right foot were purple and hyper sensitive. It took me a few miles of limping down the trail before it warmed up and I was semi comfortable again. I knew as I approached See Cyn that I was done so I called for an early pickup. Otherwise it was a great time and the weather was perfect. |
