With slightly cooler temps we were looking to hike something in the Mazatzals. So we decided to make the Y Bar Barnhardt Loop but added a trip over to Bear Spring on the Mazatzal Divide Trail. We headed up Y Bar about 730 preferring to hike up this trail rather than down it. It's in rough shape just before the saddle at about 4 miles but is in great shape after that all the way to the AZT junction. Also, checked out Y Bar Spring which had some light flow but it's surrounded by thick Manzanita.
After the AZT junction we headed south bound on Mazatzal Divide Trail over to Bear Spring where we had lunch. Very nice area and would like to camp here on a future trip. Lunch done and recharged we headed back north bound on the divide towards the Barnhardt junction. Some recent trail clearing made sections of the AZT easier to navigate and we made good time over to Barnhardt.
Took another break at Barnhardt junction before heading back. After seeing no one all day we ran into 2 backpack groups and a few day hikers on Barnhardt Trail. Barnhardt Trail also had been cleared in sections from the AZT junction about 1 mile down and the last 1.5 mile to the trail head....thanks to the trail crews for the effort! Good loop and great to see Bear Spring again.
