| no partners | | I've had good luck recently taking semi-random walks up on Hardscrabble Mesa near Strawberry and I planned another one, walking down the drainage east of Saddle Ridge. The current satellite map shows many (~20) good size pools in the first few miles of the drop, and though that picture was taken at a wet time I hoped to find unexpected ancient "hang outs" like I've stumbled upon in the other nearby creek-bottoms.
Unfortunately I found this wash (at least the part I covered) was not so popular. There was a good start with some mortars and a couple bedrock metates at the first pools - these probably used by people living nearby on top of the mesa - but further down I didn't see anything attributable to the ancients, even at some nice-looking sites.
The creek walk itself was not so bad. Only a few overgrown spots and I think only two small "waterfalls" both easily bypassed by game trails. The bushwack out at the bottom was unpleasant (as expected) - that one does have a lot of obstacles. I took the AZ Trail back most of the way before heading cross-country back to the car.
I can't recommend this one. |
