The trail crosses the ridge between Cave Creek and Gardner Canyon, follows the creek for about a half mile then becomes a ridge trail as it follows along the ridge to the south of Gardner Creek until it connects with the Baldy Super Trail. This portion of the hike is 4.5 miles and is a 2728 foot climb. The East side of mount Wrightson is scarred from the Florida fire in 2005 but appear to be recovering nicely with lots of new pines.
I actually hiked up to the junction of the Walker Basin Trail, took that trail south to Walker Pass, where I turned around and headed back to the Gardner Canyon Trail and up to Baldy Super Trail before heading back. The Walker Basin Trail stays pretty level with only a 250 foot drop as you approach Big Casa Blanca Creek and regains the drop when you approach Walker Pass. Big Casa Blanca Creek is rather interesting because of the large logs that are jammed in the creek bed. Must be a lot of water coming down this creek. Good trail almost year around, (check snow levels), I prefer Fall to Spring because it is a Southeast exposure and gets lots of sun. |
