Florida Canyon is very scenic especially as you get toward the last half. Lots of old growth fir trees that escaped the Florida fire in 2005. Florida saddle is the intersection of The Sawmill Canyon Trail, Cave Creek Trail, Florida Crest Trail and of Coarse the Florida Trail. great views from the saddle in all directions except west, you have to go along the Florida crest trail to get those.
The Armour Spring Trail Connects to the Florida Crest Trail about .3 miles from Florida Saddle. The trail is fairly level all the way to the spring. This trail is on the northern slopes of the Last large peak of the Florida Ridge so it is in the shade most of the year (probably in snow when it has long melted off in other portions of the mountain). On this hike I didn't actually get to Armour Spring, I thought where I turned around was the Spring. I will eventually get to Armour Spring when I hike from Madera Canyon to McCleary Peak.
Great Hike when you feel like you need a good work out or feel guilty about being a couch potato too long. If you don't like round trip hikes there are numerous trails that will take you down to Madera Canyon. Need a shuttle to get back to your car though. |
