I like the direction I took this hike in, Vault Mine first then Agua Caliente and then Baldy Trail Down, do the hard part first. I would not want to go down the vault mine, would be very hard on the knees and feet. Luckily it is fairly short, 1.8 miles. The only thing shorter would be to jump off an 1800 foot cliff.
This Mountain has a lot of history. The Boy scout tragedy of 1959, which I remember because some of my fathers friend were involved in the search, and the boys were just a little older than me. If you take the Temporal Gulch trail down to just past McBeth Spring you will pass by the spot were they found the three boys. The full story is on the internet.
Josephine saddle was named after Josephine Pennington of Tucson, Her father owned the Pennington store in town and has a street named after him. What is Ironic is it was her sister, Larcena, who was Kidnapped by Tonto Apache in Madera Canyon and escaped and wondered in the desert for three days before being rescued. Don't Know why the Peak was named after Josephine. The story of Larcena Pennington is also on the internet.
There are a lot more stories about this mountain and where the names came from. I like looking at the history before hiking an area because it gives you something to think about when hiking and also a perspective of the area 100 years or so prior. Just another great hike in the Santa Rita Mountains. |
