| partners | | We (5 people, 4 dogs) started out from the Pumpkin trailhead at 9:00. We headed up Pumpkin about a mile, then took the connector trail east to Bull Basin. There were a few spots of water along the connector, but I have no idea how long that water sticks around. Walking through the old burn area affords some great views of Kendrick and the surrounding area.
We headed up Bull Basin, which was quite pretty. As we gained elevation, the deadfall became more prevalent. If the trail was clear, it would be a very pleasant hike, but the negotiation over the trees was work at times. Lily wasn't at the top of her game today, so Kyle turned back with her about 2/3 of the way up. Looking back, I think maybe Kyle knew what was ahead on the trail, because he picked the perfect time to turn around
As the snow and deadfall increased, Chumley decided to take a detour up to the ridge, and for some reason, we all decided to follow him. The next hour was basically a maze of fallen trees until we reached the cabin. It really wasn't anything too terrible, but was tedious, with a lot of zigzagging around. It was a relief to reach the clearing around the cabin and return to a regular trail.
We headed up to the summit, took a lunch break, and chatted with the lookout up in the fire tower. After that, we headed down Pumpkin. The top part had a lot more fallen trees than last year, but once we got past that, the trail was great. Pumpkin is my favorite trail on Kendrick since I think it has the best views. And, for once, I didn't miss the turn on the trail I always miss, so I was happy about that. It was windy all day, but I think the gusts were the worst along Pumpkin. Great weather though, and it was nice to be cold at times. |
