On the drive to the mountains on state route 290 I passed through the small town of Paradise Valley. It was a quaint village near the north end of this picturesque valley about 37 air miles north of Winnemucca. The plan was to camp somewhere in the mountains for two nights before continuing my drive to Rome, Oregon. The village appeared to have only one open commercial establishment - the Paradise Valley Saloon. Well, at least they have their priorities straight. There was also a small church and a BLM Ranger Station but no gas station. I decided to get some advice on where to camp and go hiking - what better place than the saloon. There were two local guys in the saloon taking a mid afternoon beer break. They were a wealth of information which ended up leading me to a remote campsite off of a 4x4 track on top of a ridge at 6500 ft elevation with commanding views of Paradise Valley and the snow capped Santa Rosa Mountains.
After arriving at the campsite I hiked up the hill above camp to get some better views and to scout out possible hiking destinations for a longer hike the next day. The hill ended up having several false summits and I finally stopped after ascending about 900 ft. It was getting late in the afternoon and my mid afternoon encounter with the gentlemen in the saloon had left me thirsting for a beer so I headed back to camp after taking a few photos. The views from camp were almost as good as the ones from up on the hill so I settled in and waited to take photos of the evening sunset over the snow capped mountains. It ended up being a long wait, the sun didn't go down until about 8 pm, and it was too hazy for good photos. So I went to bed deciding to get up early to catch the morning sunrise.
PS: As I drove into the town of Paradise Valley early in the morning after spending two nights in the mountains I stopped to take some photos of some old abandoned buildings. One of the guys I had met in the saloon drove up and asked if I'd enjoyed my stay. After thanking him for the great advice he'd given me I proceeded to drive through town and stopped to get photos of the saloon from Main Street. After a few minutes there came that same local sneaking his pickup into the saloon parking lot from a back street. Perhaps he also takes an early morning beer break before his mid-afternoon beer break. |
