I had an extra day for exploring on my drive north across Nevada for a rendezvous with 10 Oregon friends in Rome, OR, where we would start a rafting trip down the Owyhee River. The Santa Rosa Mountains north of Winnemucca looked like a good place to spend a day doing some hiking. Maps showed several hiking trails and a Humboldt Nat. Forest camp ground at Lye Creek. As I approached the mountains driving up Paradise Valley it became evident that those hiking trails and the camp ground would not be accessible due to a heavy snow pack. So I changed my plan to driving up the Hinkey Summit Rd, FR-084, to where it was blocked by the snow and then looking for a place to camp. Hiking would be wherever looked interesting. Armed with directions to a good camping spot after a stop for some advice at the Paradise Valley Saloon, I made camp at around 4 that afternoon on a ridge top at 6500 ft with amazing views of the valley and the mountains. The best hiking option appeared to be up the snow blocked Hinkey Summit Road and that's where I headed from camp the next morning.

The hike up the road was pleasant with nice views of the valley below and the snow covered peaks above. The road follows Indian Creek which had a moderate flow of water but not more than you could jump across. I suspect it drys up in the summer. The road, at least what I could see of it, looked like it's probably drive-able with moderate clearance 2 wheel drive when it drys out. The snow pack started about 1.5 miles from camp but was packed spring snow so my feet only sank in about 3-4 inches. The only post holing occurred when I got the not so bright idea to take some off road shortcuts. There were many snow mobile tracks probably from the weekend before but I did not encounter another person all day. It was too early for wild flowers and the aspens along the creek were barely starting to leaf out. The prime time for hikers to visit this area is probably early June when wild flowers are at their peak and most of the snow is gone. Got back to camp in mid afternoon and enjoyed relaxing in the sun cooled by a soft mountain breeze while reading a book.
