7:50 am the lot was 80% full swarming with hikers in the cool mountain air. We started off good then settled into a social mossey. Bruce stepped aside and I heard a little voice. Nowhere to be seen just the voice of BobP saying Go Joey Go. For the first time in months the ol' heart was hammering up a storm. Not all enjoy, for myself it felt great to feel alive again. Then it happened... I got passed by a gal going away fast. Not sure if she tagged on or what but it seemed impossible to hold and "I can't" entered the arena. That's when I remembered a famous Dave1 phrase "not with that attitude". Forget every pain in your body boy and move. We came up quick on the saddle. She mingled and I continued.
I knew I had to shift down soon as one monster rock wouldn't be safe one armed. Then held a medium pace to the summit. The bonus being lots of HAZ'rs along the way. Denny joined after I played the roll of cell phone chums for a bit.
The descent to the saddle was slow, luckily Denny was nearby to accept blame for every little mishap =)
I got progressively slower to a crawl. For this hike I gleaned a trick from my old friend Johnr1. He had a huge fanny pack setup with suspenders. It seemed perfect to take the weight off my left shoulder blade. Which it did until descending. Turns out it's the shoulder if not more. B & D insisted on carrying my luggage rack. I finally gave in on the last mile as not to hold up the group. As disappointing as that was the ascent was the highlight of my summer. Believe a smaller hip only fanny pack will work better too. I'm still a fan of the suspender pack. Albeit an odd looking beast it worked remarkably well ascending and allowed my back to breathe!
Bruce was concerned about me tripping on the large quantity of roots. Now I know why, he slipped several times. Luckily nothing serious. |
