BTM!

This is my 7th trip up to this cool place. We opted for the Loop via Black Mesa Trail going in and the Dutchman going back.

The weather was perfect. It was nice at 745am when we started and was very pleasant the entire hike.

The lack of rain is starting to depress me. Every time we came across a dry wash or creek, I would tell my hiking buddy that, “this was flowing the last time I did this hike”. Not this time around, dry and dry all the way.

We did not see any dead critters, but I have seen people post pictures of sickly or dead foxes lately. I hope this rabies outbreak ends soon too.

The hike was as amazing as it always is. The climb up the Black Mesa Trail is always met with the ever growing specter of the Needle. Once you turn the corner past Yellow Peak, you get “the view” – Black Top Mesa, the Needle and Palomino, all lined up. One of my favorite views in the Supes.

We saw a good number of hikers along the Black Mesa Trail. When we turned into the Dutchman, we came across a few more parties, one heading the same we just a came and another heading towards Boulder Canyon.

The hike up Bull Pass and the mesa were steeper than I remember. Funny how those bits get lost in your memory and you only remember the awesome views up top.

There is a camping spot right at the edge of the mesa that has the perfect view of the Needle. I think my next trip up here will be an overnighter. We roamed around the top for a while, scooting over to the western edge to get a nice look at Palomino below.

The hike back down and then along the Dutchman was a nice and easy cruise all the way back to the trailhead. We encountered a good number of hikers, especially as we neared the parking area.

This is a sure thing, I always love heading up to BTM!
