1st trip
On the second day of my Superstition intro hiking I wanted to do the Black Mesa and Dutchman Trail loop. Ray put together a hike that would take me also to Black Top Mesa using the two trails I wanted to do and suggested we do it in the clockwise direction. Turned out to be a wise decision especially when the temperatures were close to 80 degrees by the afternoon. Second water and Black Mesa trails were very pleasant with the only section of those trails that got a little more challenging was going down into boulder creek. Once down in the creek and on the Dutchman Trail we immediately took the Bull Pass Trail to Bull Pass and then up to Black Top Mesa. This portion of the trail was a good workout and got the blood flowing. Great views of Aylor's Arch from the Bull Pass Trail. My closest View of Weavers Needle was from the summit of Black Top Mesa. Never got tired of looking at or Photographing this landmark. From here we headed back down to the Dutchman Trail. Not sure if I preferred the trip up to Black Top Mesa or the trip down. I think going down was harder, going up was a workout but going down was like taking a beating.
The trip back along the Dutchman was a pleasant walk and it wasn't until toward the end of the hike that I realized why Ray suggested the clockwise direction for this hike. Wise choice. This hike served to wet my appetite for a lot of other trails that I want to do in the future. Too many trails not enough time, Not enough winter at least.
Was planning another short hike for Friday but when I got up Friday Morning my Knee was really sore so I called this trip done and will have to plan another trip up here in a week or two. I want to thank Ray for being my guide and it was a pleasure hiking with him. I have done almost all my hiking solo with the exception of a few with my Wife or kids but those hikes are usually short and not real challenging. It was very enjoyable hiking with someone who enjoys a good workout. This trip was a needed get away and being with good company was an added bonus. My wife of 35 years passed away in the beginning of December and I was going crazy at home alone. Thanks again Ray you have no idea how this trip picked me up. Looking forward to more trips in the Superstitions.
