Mott (Dec 15-22, 1931) in the Arizona Republic, It was time to see if I could locate the spot where Adolph Ruth's skull was found by Music the bloodhound in Skull Valley. In addition a Jan 9, 1932 article mentioned that Ace Gardner built a monument where Ruth's body was found in Ruth Canyon. Yes, I had to go.
The hike in started at 5:10am. It was still dark but I planned on getting out before the heat. The trails are empty and slighty overgrown in a few spots but easy to follow. I hiked in over Bull Pass toward the junction with the Dutchman trail and climbed the hill where E.D. Newcomer took a photo (Dec 22, 1931) looking toward Squaw Canyon. There is an X in the photo where the skull was found. The newspaper claimed the palo verde tree that the skull was found under was on a mound so I found the most likely spot and compared surface rocks to another photo. The palo verde tree is gone now but I think it may be the right spot.
Next, I continued south on the Dutchman trail and hiked up Ruth Canyon. I found what may have been a rock monument in the spot I pulled off a topo map but not sure if it's correct. If you have an interest in the articles they can be found by searching on "The Adolph Ruth Story - ancestry.com". The link will take you to more imformation about Adolph Ruth than you knew existed.
From Ruth Canyon I decided to exit via Little Bull Pass so took a cut route (what else?) to intersect the spur trail. I kicked up 3 white-tailed deer on the trail and hiked out without seeing anyone else. There was one other hiker on the trail as I could see their shoe prints along with mine. There was one other car at the trailhead (Wyoming plates) when I left. |
