This one has become one of my spring favorites. The road into bullpen has been recently graded, but it still sucks. Only a few vehicles at 7AM on Saturday. It was very warm to start, so although the first crossing had a log bridge, I opted for the straight across sandal march. Passed a few folks at the third crossing that were debating their crossing. I showed them the best line, again straight across sandal march. Didn't see anyone else until the next day. Kept going past the fourth crossing about 40 minutes and down the side trail to the creek. Headed upstream for another mile, past the big popular campsite with deep blue pool, and into a spot I camped at last year. There is no trail along here, just following the creek .This would be an ideal base camp for a day 2 trip up to Maiden Falls. Caught 3 small trout for dinner. Warm night, good fire, no wind, and lots of stars. Headed out early Sunday morning and did some fishing along the way. While I was not surprised to catch numerous rainbow trout, I was surprised to catch quite a few smallmouth as well. About 100 yards downstream from camp I was startled by a rattle. Only the second time I have ever heard that sound in all of my hiking. I moved past it and stopped to look back to see just how close it was. About 12' from my path I saw a huge green rattlesnake that was actually partially in the creek. It was as thick as a baseball bat. I kept going. I passed several tents pitched just after climbing back out to the main trail, and more hikers at the fourth crossing. Just before the 3rd crossing I took the side trail that leads to the big jumping cliff campsite area. There were folks there too. The trail quickly became crowded after the 3rd crossing and I pushed on without any more fishing. Tire light came on just getting back to 260. I was able to make into the 76 station and put on the spare.
Bull pen road sucks.
