| no partners | | My second trip in here this month. I did say I needed to explore this area more. I found bull pen almost empty Friday afternoon. I hiked looking for a good campsite for the first night, then I planned on going further upstream on Saturday. There is a really nice secluded campsite just after the second crossing. Someone was already enjoying it...
I found a nice spot about halfway between the 3rd and 4th crossing. There are several faint trails that drop down to the creek, each has 1 or 2 campsites at the end. I was enjoying the mild calm evening at about 10:30PM when I saw then heard a large group, mostly kids, heading upstream along the main trail. I saw all of the headlamps, must have been 15 of them hiking in the dark. The next morning I hit the trail at 7AM. About 15 minutes further down the trail I heard voices, followed the trail of Kleenex and Clif bar wrappers, and found the trail they used to access the creek for camping. It was marked by a big piece of reflective orange tape on a rock... Continuing on past the 4th crossing for another 45 minutes, I found the little trail leading down to the creek. My last campsite was empty, but I wanted to explore upstream in search of the really nice campsite I have seen pictures of. I found it about a 10 minute bushwhack upstream. I found it, and it was taken. Talked to a guy fly fishing for a minute, then headed back downstream to setup camp. I spent all afternoon and evening fishing and have a good report. I caught a spunky little smallmouth bass and a brown trout on a crankbait, and 2 rainbows on a rooster tail. I have to say that this section of the creek is just loaded with trout. I had them chasing my lure with every cast. I stopped after catching 2 for dinner, but the creek is plentiful here. It was a windy night and a routine but pleasant hike out Sunday. |
