Due to plan changes on the first day of our 3-day trip by now we had run out of mapped tracks so we decided to set off driving west on Forest Road 609 toward Punkin Center and see what might catch our interest. Due to the huge amount of downed trees along/on the road we began to wonder if we would make it all the way through. Thankfully we were able to drive over an end of the trees partly in the road and the biggest danger was meeting four ATV's tearing along the road.

Funny enough, where we pulled over to let the last ATV past was the beginning of the newly recommissioned Forest Road 701. FR 701 had not been on Forest Road maps for years, and just over three years ago when it was simply an old Jeep trail we followed it to the J Slash X ranch, looping back along Turkey Creek to the west.

So, we decided to see how it has changed since our hike back in May 2015. While we found it would be passable with the 4Runner, it would come at a heavy cost in Arizona pin-stripes... possibly more like gouges. But for the most part it was an easy hike with just a few eroded areas and the last 300 feet of the descent (and yes, the return ascent) required extra care.

Arriving at the ranch the last five apple trees appeared to be dead, but as we closed in we saw new blossoms. Hopefully enough rain arrives to keep them alive another year.

For the return trip, instead of following Turkey Creek like we did last time we decided to take the same route back. Almost 28 miles of hiking over three days would be enough for this trip.
