| partners | | Hmmm... where can we car-camp & hike over 3 days within 100 miles while keeping under 85°? Sierra Ancha along AZ 288?
Even though Tracey shies away from warm-weather hiking, she was willing to chance it based on the NWS forecast in Route Editor:
Tuesday = 83° Wednesday = 85° and Thursday = 86°
Since I had three hikes planned in the area, we chose Honey Creek Divide campground as our base of operations. After pitching our tents we set of on our first hike, which I wasn't sure how much of it would be on old mining roads and how much on existing Forest Service roads.
Setting off from camp all we had to do was start walking uphill along FR 3224. It wasn't marked at this end, only at the other where it reached FR 3222. Funny enough, it was the same there... FR 3222 was unmarked on the west end but marked on the east, where we would see the sign at Reynolds TH.
Forest Roads FYI... Although there was some new signage, the Forest Service roads (3222, 3224 & 3224A) are all designated 'administrative use only' and closed to public vehicle use.
Anyway, most of the hiking was just following along the forest roads except for wandering around Reynolds Creek, attempting to locate remnants of an old tram. We found nothing within a 200' radius of where it was marked on my GPS, but then the Garmin base map is close to 70 years old.
Not very much of note during the hike, just some very recent mountain lion and bear tracks. In fact, the second set of lion prints were made within the central three hour time-span of our five hour hike. Oh yeah, just one mine along the road and it wasn't very deep.
When we got back to camp around 1 pm it was already 94° and would hit a high of 97°.
So much for a high of 85°! ](https://hikearizona.com/dex2/images/smilies/eusa_wall.gif)
Knowing it would be a warm overnight and hotter on Wednesday we decided we'd do an early hike in the morning then head home a day early. |
