It wasn't long before we approached an almost-dry water tank and saw three mule deer. I was already facing the two smaller deer so took their photo first but before I could swing the camera over to the large buck it was already bounding away, boink, boink, boink, as mule deer are apt to do. Oh well.
The rest of the hike was pretty much a road walk with a series of ups & downs along the way. Right about the point we turned around we encountered two open 8" PVC pipes, sticking vertically out of the ground barely a few inches, apparently leading into an open chamber of some kind. Upon dropping a rock into each one it sounded like they were possibly 4 & 7 feet deep. No splash, just a dull thud, so who knows what they are/were for.
Back to the car we set out on the return trip, making sure to stop just before Cherry Creek Road for a few photos of the crested Saguaro in bloom. |
