Mainly we visited the ancient sites dating from the neolithic (~3000BC) to the Vikings time (~1000AD). There are many tombs, and Brochs, and stone circles, and it seems like almost every bump is manmade. The stories about the discoveries of many of the ruins are as interesting as the sites themselves - the tourists and public through admissions paid and donations support ongoing excavations.
Several of the places we visited involved round trip walks of 0.5 to ~3mi, so no strains, and welcome 55-60deg temperatures. Memorable trip.
