| no partners | | I'd heard there was a substantial ruin between Perry Mesa and the Verde River along the road to Sheep Bridge but I could never figure out where it was. I finally saw something in the satellite view that made me head out for a look.
Seven Springs Road is not in great shape and it got muddier as I got further in (and more committed). It's about 30mi of dirt road and as I approached my planned starting point I came across three horseback riders. It was a little awkward getting by them and I didn't see a good pullover spot so I continued another 0.5 mile or so to park and start up the hill. This turned out to be a lucky break because I soon found pottery and ran right into a big ruin - about 30 rooms or so. It had been extensively dug out and I didn't see much interesting except for beaucoup pottery - mainly plainware but several different types (to my eye).
I continued on to my original target and found more pottery there and evidence of a small ruin on a flat hilltop with a good view west. But clearly the "lucky find" is the main ruin, the one I wanted to see. I'd have missed it on my planned route.
To make a day of it I walked a ridge loop to see what else I might find. My feet didn't touch any ground that a million cows hadn't been on before. The walking wasn't bad: at about 3000' the grass was much thinner than on the higher hills. Saw a few rock arrangements that might have been man made but nothing to get excited about.
It was going to be 30 mi of dirt road to get back too, so I chose to take the route out Bloody Basin Rd. over Perry Mesa to I-17. I always like to do that 60mi stretch from Cave Creek to I-17 if there is a walk to justify it. A lot of pretty color visible in pockets along the way. |
