A few months ago I took a circuitous route to a nice petroglyph site. Some friends visited it later and found some more nice petroglyphs not too far away down the canyon. I wondered if all the rock art in this canyon meant that it was a popular ancient route between the Seven Springs area and the Verde River and so I thought it would be worth walking up the shallow canyon from the bottom - maybe there'd be more things to see.

My wife Catherine came along and first task was negotiating safe passage with the couple groups doing target practice at the bottom. That done we headed up the creek with an eye on the rocks along the slopes. Didn't see any cultural signs until most of the way up when we hit one of the two glyph waypoints Petrophile had given me. There was some decent stuff there but it was guarded by large yellow wasps and one quickly stung me when I got too close. So most of my pictures were taken from a respectful distance.

We continued on to the second site (I visited it before a couple weeks ago) and one of the things I wanted to do was to cut away a big prickly pear that was covering a large panel. I was surprised to see somebody beat me to it! Don't know who it was but I'd bet there's a HAZ connection. Anyway we enjoyed the nice glyphs at that site. Also glad I didn't have to deal with that cactus...it did not cut easy.

Finally further on to the main site, I showed Catherine the impressive display.

We took the ridge back, I thought we'd have a decent chance of finding a small ruin or two. The grass is too high though - we found a few pottery concentrations but mainly were happy to not break a leg on the hidden rocks.

I saw a deer and a cardinal. Catherine says she saw a fox. "Are you sure it wasn't a squirrel?". "It was a fox."
