| no partners | | By now I'm sure you've all seen the cover of the fall 2017 Journal of Arizona Archaeology https://hikearizona.com/images/2022/JAz ... ersion.pdf. And I'm sure many of you have wondered whether that HAZ guy who walks around on Perry Mesa is embarrassed that he's not heard of or seen that cover petroglyph they call "Mystic Lizard".
Well yes, a little bit.
I went out to look for it two weeks ago but bailed out when the roads seemed a little too muddy. Today they were less so but the flow at the Agua Fria crossing was stronger and the mud ruts there made me a little nervous, but in the end no problem for my Outback.
I had a rough idea where to look based on the background mountains and I parked at New Windmill. The mesa is finally coming back from the fire that scorched the grasslands almost exactly a year ago. This is nice for the creatures but makes artifact hunting a little harder.
Anyway I was amazed I found it without much trouble! I'm either very good or very lucky (take the latter bet). But with victory in hand I made it a short day. |
