Nostalgic for me: spent a lot of weekends/holidays here 40 yrs ago at a friend's (parent's) cabin. One Spring Break skied over the pass from Lake Alpine to Markleeville then hitch-hiked to Death Valley. Today it's hard to imagine where that plan came from.
The park was packed Saturday afternoon and we joined the multitudes for the easily accessed 1.7mi N.Grove Trail. Despite the crowds it's a nice walk through this Sequoia grove and reading the guide at the 26 marked signs was worth the effort. Next morning returned to the park (paid another $12) and took the drive to the S.Grove and trail. That was very nice - 5mi walk and no people with a 9AM start. By our 11:15 finish the lot was getting full, but hikers will prefer this end of the park.
