I noticed an obvious ruin on the south edge of Larry Canyon which was interesting to me for a couple reasons: 1) I've never walked out to this fairly remote edge of the mesa, and 2) In several low res archaeological maps of Perry Mesa I've stumbled on through the years none show any sites (large or small) in that vicinity.
I drove farther south on the rough mesa road than I ever have before. I attribute my enhanced boldness to some tougher tires I recently put on my Subaru. Still there was a lot of featureless flat country to pass through and I was lucky enough to stumble across two small ruins in addition to the larger one I targeted. The small ones were easy to identify by the pottery pieces all around them.
The main ruin, situated on a point overlooking Larry Canyon. is unusual in that the low walls showed well-defined rooms...not just a big rockpile. There is a rectangular room about 30' away, the whole floorplan looked not so different from a large modern home with a garage.
Good day...this section of the mesa was less crowded than average 700yrs ago but not uninhabited. |
