There is also no trail that goes to the summit but I was able to utilize private gravel roads, atv roads and unmaintained paths to get there. Could have driven closer to the top but wanted some exercise.Started hiking at 2950 elevation along a fire road near our property line eventually crossing into Va then at the end of the “summit road” cross back into WV. There are lots of blueberry and huckleberry bushes as well as acorn producing oaks so there is an abundance of black bears around. They usually will retreat when encountered, did come across a mother and 2 cubs when parking and managed to get a picture of one cub that quickly went up a tree. Because this is in the NRQZ about 20 miles from Green Bank electronics,ie. cell phones rarely work here, tried to use route scout here but not successful. The west side of Brushy Mountain has a prominent rocky spine called devils backbone, it descends toward the tiny town of Blue Grass where the Potomac river is born, makes for a scenic drive past the sheep farms. Highland County Va reportedly has more sheep than people! Will post a couple of perhaps interesting photos of the area. |
