About 12 t0 13 years ago, shortly after moving here, I had hiked out to Toney Ranch from the haunted canyon trail head on 287A, I found this route today much more scenic , nice to see some running and pooling water . Started my adventure with a scenic tour of forest road 287b , as I drove along after about 4 miles I realized this wasn't the road I wanted,I had to go back to the pinto valley mine gate to pick up 287,like they say the memory is the first thing to go.If you head out this way you need to see the whites of the gate guards eyes and then the sign to turn on 287. No one else at the trail head and saw no hikers or ghosts on the haunted canyon trail.Quite an operation the mine company has along the road some of their pressurized pipes have significant leaking. At the end of the road near the corral and gate was greeted by quite a stench from a dead skunk.Enjoyed the rest of the easy to follow trail cypress and sycamore trees abound, sounds of birds, rustling leaves and trickling water,oh and couple of areas of swarming bees. One of those areas is where a nicely placed log you can walk on and keep your feet dry, at the current water level, goes through a cut in the rocks. The Toney Ranch spring was going about a pint a minute not sure about the quality but it looked clear, took a break on the big log next to the hitching post at the cabin. The cabin built in 1913 seems to be in a state of gradual collapse, inside there is a register , info on SALT, and a donation envelope, remember to pack your checkbook if you visit here. Glad to have chosen this route to get back to the cabin. |
