| no partners | | Harpers Ferry area hike, initially thought I would get on the AT in Harpers Ferry and follow it along the canal path to the Weverton Cliffs, but storms were threatening and had read the canal path was boring so decided to take care of the cliff overlook first. Parked beside the AT on Keep Tryst Road, started up the AT to pass under Rt340 and immediately could hear the roaring of Israel Creek I presume due to the recent rains. After a short distance maybe 1/2 mile reached the official Weverton Cliffs parking area which was housing tented backpackers who survived the overnight deluge. The mother trail is well maintained , but rocks were wet and slippery and numerous tree roots kept my eye on the trail, nice canopy of hardwoods which precluded much distance viewing anyway. Weverton side trail ,blue blazed, to the overlook is signed and well marked, ends in a boulder area with great views of the river. Saw about a dozen other cliff bound hikers and a half dozen real hikers ie. those with small u hauls on their backs, expect its busier in better weather. In the cliff area observed the plaque honoring a politician, Goodloe Byron ,who helped with legislation to preserve the trail , apparently he died at age 49 jogging the canal path. After a few minutes of viewing and picture taking departed to my starting point and then continued past it across the railroad tracks to the C&O canal path, appears to be a popular way for bike riders to go into Harpers Ferry. After .3 miles on the canal path Israel creek makes an impressive entry under the railroad bridge and into the Potomac River, after that the path and rain swollen canal were as boring as advertised, glad I did not walk the 3 miles from Harpers Ferry, now time for another hike today if the thunder and lightning hold off.If you park at the official parking lot and forget the canal path would make the hike to the Cliffs and back no more than 3 miles. |
