The fresh smell of spruce, like walking through a Christmas tree lot, is prevalent on this short hike. This makes a loop around the lookout tower on Spruce Knob at 4863 the tallest peak in the mountain state of West Virginia and in the Allegheny Range. The benchmark, adjacent to the 2 story lookout tower , is a mere 300 yards from the parking lot , this trail affords views in all directions .The trail is relatively flat with gravel, and is child and pet friendly, a wood deck viewing platform and flat boulders provide additional viewing locations as you make your way around for frequent picture taking . Several nicely shaded picnic tables surround the parking lot, one pit toilet available, about 10 cars in the lot today, cell phone service weak. The more difficult Huckleberry trail also ends in the parking area. If you wanted to make a challenging hike to the summit you could start at Seneca Creek trailhead ,take Seneca Creek Trail to junction with Huckleberry trail then to the summit parking for a total one way distance of about 11 miles, a shuttle would be ideal if not backpacking. Pleasant 68 degrees at the summit, saw an albino squirrel, sorry no picture, a snowshoe hare and numerous deer in the area, also wildflowers in bloom , a few ripe blackberries, blueberry and huckleberry bushes. To access this area via paved roads take Route 28 near Riverton, then Briary Gap Rd.,FR 112 then FR 104 to the end about 12 miles total from Route 28.To reach Seneca Creek trailhead as well as Spruce Knob Lake , which has a 1 mile circular hike, continue past FR 104 where FR 112 becomes a gravel road with plenty of potholes for about 4 miles.Nice wildflower viewing on this route.
