| no partners | | This was the first 14er for Tracie, my intrepid hiking partner, and me. Actually we had intended to hike Mount Sherman first, but when we got to the Iowa Gulch TH for Sherman, it was 32 degrees, snowing like crazy, and the wind was blowing like it was no tomorrow. As a result, we decided to leave and drive about 1.5 hours north and check out Mount Bierstadt (14,060'). It turned out to be a good call because it was clear with no snow at all on Mount Bierstadt.
We started and ended the hike at the Guanella Pass TH. The TH is easy to get to -- the road is paved and the TH parking lot is even paved.
We did four 14ers over 4 days, and I would say that Bierstadt is the least difficult of the four (the others were Sherman, Quandary, and Elbert).
The TH is at about 11,650', and the initial part of the hike is on a nice trail through an open meadow. Although as you get closer to the summit, you are walking on rocks. There were not many people on the trail, and at the summit there were 3 other people. On the way back, we saw 3 mountain goats not too far below the summit. The goats were not at all concerned with us -- we got within 25-30 feet of them.
If you are looking to do a 14er, this is a good one to start off with. |
