| partners | | angela suggested a hike for sunday and we tossed around ideas
looking for about ten miles, not too much elevation gain, at around 6,000 feet
remembered seeing a nice loop that kathy and karl had done in prescott, so angela cut it down to size
set out around 0900 with clear skies, a slight breeze and temps in the low 70s
first was aspen creek trail, which meanders through pine forest
then the first of two detours, cutting off the section that continues to meet east copper trail
instead we took a use trail up to near mt. francis
next detour was the right fork of another use trail that brought us halfway around the mountain ](https://hikearizona.com/dex2/images/smilies/eusa_wall.gif "Brick wall")
backtracked and took the left fork, which led us to the road that goes up to the peak
not much to see there, other than communications equipment
some decent views
dropped back to the road and had a little lunch break
continued up the road to the sierra prieta overlook
great views to the west
noticed a trail leading up a nearby ridge - the sierra prieta trail
followed it to the high point and did some off trail trying for the perfect view of granite mountain and watson lake
good views of spruce, union and some other peaks
retraced our steps and took copper basin road back to the trailhead
there are a number of unmarked trails and roads all over this area
our detours really didn't matter on the mt. francis summit 
a lot of road walking, but very scenic and little traffic
much more to explore from aspen creek trailhead
just noticed bruce and joe have done some of these trails, too
headed home after dinner at the office, with one slowdown on I-17
fun day on new trails with good company
