While one can't wander at will at the monument, off the monument is Coconino Forest. While checking the area on HAZ topo I noticed an area a couple of miles away called Red House Basin. Further digging on GE showed me a structure. While the sink was interesting and the look on my wife's face indicated I would not be going down into it, we choose to wander around topside. Found some small sites and a handful of petros, it was the pottery we found plenty of. We made it to the structure and quite surprised by what we found. Turns out the Red House Pueblo is one of the few free standing masonry walls and occupied from AD 1130-1220. In the early 1900s sheepherders occupied it and roofed. Turns out this was a good thing in preserving it and this led to later stabilization with consultation from NAU and the Hopi tribe |
