| no partners | | My wife and I have put in a couple hundred miles in the North Maricopa Mountains over the years. It being one of her favorite areas to hike in. But 3 years ago we decided to try the South Maricopas, south of SR 238. This not being a good idea since the illegal traffic in this area is heavy and it just ain't that pretty. [ photoset ]
The Mrs. said never again south of 238 and that was fine with me. We had gone down to the north mountains last week and had a great hike, so it will be repeated this weekend. We decided we'd park at the main TH that leads to the Butterfield trail (like only a thousand times). So on the way down I said you know how much lusher the east side of the mountains are and we've covered every square foot. Well what about the South Maricopas, but on the east side and the railroad tracks have prevented offroading and all the illegal activity is at Shawmut a couple of miles away and all those military people are at the border and and and. So we parked at milepost 19 on SR238 and headed west to the mountains. It was awesome pristine desert, no roads all over the place, no fires had been through and as Deb pointed out, no cattle to trash the fragile desert. It was more beautiful than we imagined at which time she mentioned that was one of my best sales job. We did find some water bottles, but they were maybe 3 years old. Deb was totally relaxed though and not concerned. When we got in the truck and started to drive down the road I heard, next time we need to start over in this area and head in. Said the woman who vowed never to hike south of SR 238 again. |
