I saw on GE an old road going south of the BNSF railway into the South Maricopas. We pulled off the Maricopa road a couple of hundred feet from the Estrella TH and took the old road south. After a mile in it entered the Sonoran Wilderness and the road became less significant. For the first 1/2 mile from the railway it goes through an old burn, but then it becomes pristine desert. The road ended up in a basin that was blooming with Mexican poppies and lupines. This area was not "illegal" trafficked as where we were a couple of miles west, allowing my wife to be a lot more comfortable.
